Discounts

APIO provides flexible discount mechanisms that allow merchants to influence purchasing behavior while keeping price calculations predictable and transparent.

There are two types of discounts in APIO:

  • Quantity-based discounts
  • Reference prices

Each type serves a different purpose and is applied differently in the pricing flow.

Quantity-Based Discounts

Quantity-based discounts apply when a customer purchases multiple units of the same product.

The discount increases as the quantity increases, incentivizing higher-volume purchases.

How It Works

  • The merchant defines discount tiers based on quantity
  • Each tier specifies a percentage discount
  • The applicable discount is automatically applied based on the purchased quantity

Example

QuantityDiscount
10%
25%
310%
4+15%

If a customer purchases 3 units, a 10% discount is applied to the final price calculation.

Use Cases

  • Bulk purchases
  • Wholesale pricing
  • Volume-based incentives

Quantity-based discounts directly affect the final charged amount and are fully compatible with subscriptions and one-time purchases.

Reference Prices

Reference prices are used strictly for visual and marketing purposes.

They represent an original or comparative price that is displayed as crossed out in the marketplace, helping communicate perceived savings.

How Reference Prices Work

  • The reference price does not affect billing or calculations
  • The actual charged price remains unchanged
  • Reference prices are shown as crossed out in the UI

Example

  • Reference price: CLP 12,990
  • Actual price: CLP 10,990

In the marketplace, the reference price appears crossed out, while the actual price is used for billing.

Compatibility and Priority

Reference prices have important limitations:

  • Reference prices are not compatible with promotions
  • If a promotion is active:
    • The promotion takes priority
    • The reference price will not be displayed

This prevents overlapping price signals and avoids confusing customers.

Best Practices

  • Use quantity-based discounts to incentivize larger purchases
  • Use reference prices to highlight long-term savings or value perception
  • Avoid combining reference prices with active promotions
  • Clearly communicate discount rules in your marketplace

Discounts in APIO are designed to balance flexibility, transparency, and a clear customer experience.
